The Finnish government has issued a warning to a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and politician, Mr. Simon Ekpa, for using social media to call for sit-at-home orders in Nigeria. The government stated that these actions are capable of disturbing the peace and causing bloodshed. Furthermore, the imposition of sit-at-homes on days slated for democratic elections is an act of international terrorism.
The government received complaints from Nigerians in Finland and the Nigerian government about Mr. Ekpa's various pronouncements on social media. The Finnish government has directed Mr. Ekpa to call off his planned sit-at-homes by using the same media outlets he used to make his illegal pronouncements. He has been given 48 hours to reverse course, or he will be arrested and charged with international terrorism.
Prime Minister Sanna Marin stated that the government is worried about the potential consequences of Mr. Ekpa's actions. The government has directed the Attorney General, Raija Toiviainen, to ensure that the directive is immediately carried out.
Mr. Ekpa is a self-declared apostle of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on Bịafra Restoration (IPOB), a group that advocates for the independence of Biafra from Nigeria. The Finnish government has warned Mr. Ekpa to desist from such nefarious activities that are capable of disturbing the peace and causing bloodshed.
The warning comes amidst rising tensions in Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general elections. There have been concerns over the possibility of violence and the impact it could have on the country's democracy. The Finnish government's warning to Mr. Ekpa is seen as a move to prevent the situation from escalating further.
