President Muhammadu Buhari has given his approval for the postponement of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, which was previously scheduled for May 3-7, 2023. The new date for the census will be determined by the incoming administration.
The decision was made after a meeting between the President, members of the Federal Executive Council, and the Chairman of the National Population Commission at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, April 28th, 2023.
The meeting emphasized the importance of conducting an up-to-date census, 17 years after the last one, to collect data that will drive the developmental goals of the country and improve the living standards of the Nigerian people. The President noted that significant progress had been made in the implementation of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, including the completion of the Enumeration Area Demarcation, the conduct of first and second pretests, the recruitment and training of adhoc workers, procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), and ICT infrastructures.
The President commended the Commission for the methodology being put in place to conduct an accurate and reliable census, including the massive deployment of technology. He directed the Commission to continue with preparations for the census to sustain the gains already recorded and provide the basis for the incoming administration to consolidate these achievements.
The meeting was attended by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami; the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed; the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Mr. Clem Agba, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha.
The decision to postpone the census has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some have expressed disappointment, others have argued that the postponement will allow for better preparations and implementation of the census, which will ultimately yield more accurate and reliable data for national development.
