Lassa Fever Outbreak in Ebonyi State, Nigeria
The Lassa Centre in Fetha, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, has recorded a number of cases of Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic illness, with several distant reports of fatalities due to suspected Lassa virus infection. In response, the Office of the Director of Health SUG has issued a notice to all students of Ebonyi State University regarding the outbreak and the need for everyone to practice water-tight hygiene procedures.
The Director of Health SUG, Odicha-ude Chidiebube, emphasized the importance of regular hand washing with running water and soap, covering edibles at home to avoid contamination by vectors, and limiting contact with other people and avoiding contact with bodily fluids. Additionally, anyone experiencing a persistent temperature rise that lasts longer than usual is encouraged to report it immediately.
In order to raise awareness of the outbreak and the need for caution, the Director of Health SUG also encouraged people to spread the message of good hygiene practices to those who may not be aware of the situation. It is important to note that Lassa fever is highly contagious and can be fatal if not treated in time, so it is crucial for everyone to take the necessary precautions and stay safe.
